Quarles-Burton Cemetery
Algood, Tennessee

Approximately a mile and a half south of Algood,
Tennessee, on the Old Walton Road, just west of the
Old Qualls [originally Quarles] Road, on the north side of
Walton Road, is a Tennessee Historical Commission marker,
which reads:

"WHITE PLAINS, William P. Quarles,
a Revolutionary War veteran, settled here in 1805. A favorite stopping place on the
Old Walton Road, which was built by the state in the early 1800s to join Nashville
with Knoxville, White Plains contained a first-class inn, school, and general store.
Putnam County’s first post office was located here."

The marker indicates the entrance to the Quarles-Burton Cemetery.

"The original White Plains house of William P. Quarles sat on the Walton Road
where the Burton part of the cemetery is now located.  The Quarles grave yard was to
the side and rear of the house.  The original store, blacksmith shop, and post office
were across the road from the house." -- Stephen R. Quarles, January 13, 2008
[Stephen R. Quarles is a great-great-grandson of William Pennington Quarles]

As you turn north to enter the cemetery, immediately to your left is a large granite
sign.   It was designed by Claude Ann Burton.  Her late husband David Burton,
a Quarles descendant, built the brick base.  The front of the sign displays the name
of the cemetery, the Quarles Coat of Arms, and the Burton Coat of Arms.

The reverse side of the sign gives a Quarles Family Genealogy, which Mrs. Burton
coordinated with the late Roy C. Phillips, another Quarles descendant.
According to his son, Rodger D. Phillips, the genealogy was written by his father.
Mrs. Burton tells us that the sign was placed in the cemetery with the approval
of the Cemetery Board members in 1996.  It reads:

cemetery, William Pennington Quarles and Ann Hawes Quarles
